United States Homeland Security says NBC report claiming that Russian hackers “successfully penetrated” U.S. voter roles before the 2016 elections is false

WASHINGTON – Today, Jeanette Manfra, National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) Assistant Secretary for the Office of Cybersecurity and Communications, expelled the following matter per the new NBC news coverage on the Department of Homeland Security’s efforts to fight election hacking.

“Recent NBC stating has skewed contribution and confused the open with courtesy to Department of Homeland Security and state and internal supervision efforts to fight election hacking. First off, let me be clear: we have no justification – old or new – that any votes in the 2016 elections were manipulated by Russian hackers. NBC News continues to secretly report my new comments on attempted election hacking – which clearly counterpart my testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last summer – as some kind of “breaking news,” wrongly claiming a change in the administration’s position on cyber threats. As we pronounced eight months ago, a series of states were the aim of Russian supervision cyber actors seeking vulnerabilities and entrance to U.S. election infrastructure. In the infancy of cases, only basic activity like scanning was observed, while in a tiny series of cases, actors were means to entrance the complement but we have no justification votes were changed or differently impacted.

“NBC’s insane reporting, which is being roundly criticized elsewhere in the media and by certainty experts alike, undermines the ability of the Department of Homeland Security, the partners at the Election Assistance Commission, and state and internal officials opposite the republic to do the impossibly critical jobs. While we’ll continue the partial to teach NBC and others on the threat, some-more importantly, the Department of Homeland Security and the state and internal partners will continue the goal to secure the nation’s election systems.

“To the state and internal partners in the election community: there’s no doubt we’re making genuine and suggestive swell together. States will do their partial in how they responsibly conduct and exercise secure voting processes. For the part, we’re going to continue to support with risk and disadvantage assessments, offer cyber hygiene scans, yield real-time hazard intel feeds, issue certainty clearances to state officials, partner on occurrence response planning, and broach cybersecurity training. The list goes on of how we’re disposition brazen and assisting the partners in the election community. We will not stop, and will mount by the partners to strengthen the nation’s election infrastructure and safeguard that all Americans can have certainty in the approved elections.”
